Money for animal shelter scratched from budget

CLINTON — Money left in the budget by the former county board to pay for a new animal shelter was scratched Thursday by the new county board. But, board members vowed to continue the process toward a new shelter.

Board member Pete Daugherty repeated Thursday his concern that the county was going to levy money for a shelter without any clear plan or timetable for construction of a new shelter.

“I, for one, don’t want to be accused of rat-holing money,” Daugherty said to the former board members in November. He repeated that sentiment to new members on Thursday, making a motion that the county remove $400,000 budgeted for a new shelter in order to lower the tax levy.

Progress on planning for the new shelter stalled earlier, and former board president Melonie Tilley, although a strong supporter of the shelter, felt the money should have been removed from the budget.
