County board votes against chairman Sherrie Brown in employee disciplinary issue

Posted: Friday, Mar 8th, 2013

CLINTON — The county board chairmanship of Sherrie Brown took a beating Thursday night, beginning with a call from a former board member for the current board to remove Brown as chairman.

Brown never looked up as former board member Levi Sturgeon criticized Brown and the board for eliminating its committee system and Brown in particular for her leadership style. Sturgeon referred to Brown’s tenure as chairman as a possible “dictatorship.”

After the current board took office in late 2012, it narrowly approved a measure proposed by Brown to eliminate its system of committees, through which board business was filtered before reaching the full board. The result was more and longer meetings.

Sturgeon said the board had not met any of the promises it made when it took office.

“You’ve had three to four-hour meetings; your transparency isn’t necessarily there,” Sturgeon said. “You have people acting as individuals, not as the board; you have employees who are concerned. It alarms me that none of these promises have been kept.”

Sturgeon also pointed out that some current county board members were part of a tax lawsuit against the county, “yet, you’re making decisions about the county’s budget,” he said.

Sturgeon said he felt the board’s only accomplishments so far were in increasing stress, anxiety and chaos.
