City shelves non-highway vehicle ordinance for now

CLINTON — For the time being, the city council will not act to amend the code to allow residents to drive vehicles not licensed by the state on city streets. The fact that the state does not permit such vehicles to cross state highways was one factor guiding council members.

Earlier this summer, a couple of residents asked the council to consider licensing the vehicles, which have been commonly referred to as “non-highway vehicles,” locally. This would make it legal for the vehicles, which include golf carts, certain types of small, personal off-road vehicles and others, to be driven on city streets.
