SPRINGFIELD – Last year, the Lady Maroons finished with their first winning season since 2000-01 with a record of 18-11.
Clinton head coach Josh Williams said he is setting the bar even higher this year, starting with heavy competition in the summertime.
“We’re getting so close to being an elite team not just in Central Illinois, but in the state in [Class] 2A,” Williams said. “The kids are buying in. The kids believe it, and the coaches believe it, and it’s exciting.”
The Lady Maroons participated in the Pana Shootout in June. Despite playing in its third game of the day and having only six players available, Clinton lost by a mere single-digit point margin to a Pana team that won a Class 2A sectional title last year.
The Lady Maroons lost by five at another point during the summer to Bloomington Central Catholic, which moved up to Class 3A this year.
“We’ve been really good this summer,” Williams said. “We’ve been terrific. Our kids are right there. We’re battling some of the best teams.”
