ATHENS — Austin Rauch ripped a first-pitch single up the middle to plate Bryson Swift, and the second-seeded Clinton Maroons junior high baseball team edged past six seed Tri-City 2-1 in eight innings Saturday at the Class 3A Athens Regional.
Clinton won the game despite striking out 14 times, though the Maroons drew nine walks.
For the Tornadoes, Steven Price singled with two out in the first (after Jud Conn was robbed by a diving Swift catch in center field); he was stealing second when the pitch got past the catcher, and he ended up at third, but Mac Hickman retired Bry Long.
The Maroons’ first nine batters either struck out (six) or walked against Long, who gave up only two hits in seven innings before being forced to leave due to IESA rules that limit innings pitched in a game. For the complete article see the 09-18-2012 issue.
