Maroons learning patience in the fire

CLINTON — Clinton Boys Basketball coach Chris Gibson figured facing the Monticello Sages wouldn’t be an easy task. Monticello came into Clinton Tuesday night ranked No. 10 (2A) with a 13-1 record. It turned out he was right. Senior Bryan Phipps had 14 points, and Sages rolled to a 56-35 victory.

“We knew going into tonight that this was one of those games where our best defense would be our best offense,” Gibson said “Monticello is 13-1 for a reason , they’re strong, they can score, and their balanced. We wanted to try to control the ball and keep it out of Monticello’s hands as much as possible. We did not do that early to the point where we got ourselves into that hole, and we had to change the way we were doing things after that.”
