CHARLESTON — The Clinton Lady Maroons track and field team was coming off of a huge high after winning its first ever Sectional meet the week before, but there was little time as the girls prepared for their 2013 IHSA State appearance.
Nine athletes combined for seven events at the Eastern Illinois University track in Charleston, with preliminaries for Class 1A beginning Thursday morning. The young pole-vaulting duo of sophomore Hannah Swift and freshman Betsy Lovett would kickstarted the field event action.
Sophomore thrower Alexis Obermeyer represented the Maroons in the shot put ring. Jumpers Ally Lawson, a senior, and sophomore Shianne Smith competed in the triple jump. Becca Anderson took on the 100m prelims and join fellow sophomore Erin West for the 200m. The sprinters combined with relay extrodinaires, senior Jade Thomas and Junior Morgan Witzke for both the 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay. After a brief but emotionally charged pep talk from head coach Randy Anderson, the girls put on their game faces.
