DUBUQUE, Iowa — Susan Magill Smith died after a valiant encounter with cancer on January 28, 2013 at her home Edgewood Cottage, 755 Sunset Ridge, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Susan was born on June 3 in Denver, Colo. to airline pioneer Robert H. Magill and Elizabeth Markel Magill and is sister to R. Hugh Magill of Winnetka, Ill. and Christine Magill Baldwin of Westwood, Mass.  She is survived by her spouse Peter and  her loving family.  Her parents preceded her in death.

Susan is a graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. and the University of Minnesota.  At the time of her death, along with her spouse, she served as vice president for enrollment management and university relations at the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa.

A private, family graveside celebration of her life – a life joyfully, lovingly and generously lived – will be held in early summer in New Hampshire in the gorgeous White Mountains.

Memorial gifts can be directed to the Holly Lynn James Memorial Nursing Scholarship at the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa.

Special thanks to colleagues and friends at the University of Dubuque, Luther College, and Earlham College for their many acts of kindness and strong support.  We are grateful to the staff of Hospice of Dubuque – especially Angela, Melissa and Tracey — for helping us navigate through strange waters.  Special thanks to Dr. Mark Hermann of Dubuque Internal Medicine for being a model of what the practice of medicine was always intended to be – humane and patient-centered.

The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque, IA is in charge of the arrangements.
