Sirens accidentally activated during test

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 9th, 2012

CLINTON — A test of emergency warning sirens in Farmer City on Thursday accidentally activated some 40 sirens across DeWitt, Macon, McLean and Piatt Counties, DeWitt County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director Teresa Barnett reported Thursday. The sirens were activated just past 1 p.m. on Thursday.

About 15 minutes after the activation, EMA personnel announced over the county’s CenCom system that the activation was an accident caused by a “glitch.” Barnett gave a report about the incident to the county board’s public safety committee on Thursday evening.

“An error occurred during the time when the Farmer City sirens were being tested,” Barnett said. “That is actually a separate system from the Exelon system.”
