Big fourth quarter lifts Lady Maroons past Sullivan

Posted: Friday, Dec 14th, 2012

CLINTON — After losing on the road to Sullivan last season, the Lady Maroons’ basketball team expected a battle Monday night and got as much as they could handle, needing a fourth-quarter rally to seal a key Okaw Conference victory, 54-43.

The Lady Maroons jumped out early, stifling the Sullivan offense for a mere three points in the first frame.  Clinton’s offense, meanwhile, fed off its defense, scoring on several turnovers and fast break opportunities en route to a 12-point quarter.

Sullivan eventually slowed down the Lady Maroons, which were forced to play man-to-man offense.  This, according to head coach Josh Williams, resulted in rushed shot attempts and questionable passes.  With the home team’s struggles, Sullivan climbed back into contention, making it a one-point ball game at halftime as Clinton clung to a 18-17 lead.

Clinton continued to sputter against Sullivan in the third quarter, as the Lady Redskins outscored the Lady Maroons 17-9 to take a five-point lead into the final frame.
