County tables aquifer coalition membership

Modified: Friday, Jan 11th, 2013

CLINTON — Members of the DeWitt County Board hoping the county would join the Champaign Coalition as part of its ammunition against Clinton Landfill were likely disappointed Thursday. The board voted 7-3 to table action to join the coalition until the board’s February 7 meeting.

Layne Christiansen, of Layne Hydro (Layne Christiansen Company), and Angela Adams, representing the coalition, gave a presentation to the board offering a survey of the history and details about the Mahomet Aquifer. The coalition seeks Sole Source Aquifer designation for the aquifer, ostensibly to protect it from potential pollution.

Several members of the county board, including some new members, were elected into office partly on their stand against a pending chemical waste unit expansion permit for Clinton Landfill. They oppose expansion of the unit because it sits over the aquifer, a major drinking water source.
