Billy Kay Sumner

SULLIVAN, Ill. — Billy Kay Sumner, 68, of Sullivan, passed away 3:58 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013 in Decatur Memorial Hospital after his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services to celebrate Billy’s life were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2013 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home, with Pastor Grant Wade officiating. Visitation was held one hour before service. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois, Decatur, Ill.

Mr. Sumner was born February 5, 1945, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of William K. and Edith Eliene (Huffman) Sumner. As a youngster he attended the Hallsville Christian Church in Hallsville but recently became a member of the First Christian Church in Sullivan. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1964. Bill married his best friend Judith M. (Quinlan) Gregory in 1990 in Covington, Indiana and later repeated their vows on April 20, 1991 in Decatur, Ill. To celebrate their 10-year anniversary, they repeated their vows on the beach November 7, 2000 in Maui, Hawaii.

Together they raised her daughter, Kim, from a previous marriage whom he loved and cared for as his own. Bill worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 38 years before retiring March 1, 2002. He was a past board member for the Sullivan Country Club, a diehard Cubs and Bears fan and enjoyed many hours golfing with his friends and wife at the Club.

Surviving are his beloved wife and caregiver, Judy (Quinlan) Sumner; daughters Kimberly S. Smith (Michael) of Sullivan, Susan Norris (Mike) of McKinney, Texas, and son Kenneth H. Sumner (Becky) of Steelville, Mo.; sister Kayleen Sumner of Folkston, Ga.; five grandchildren and one due in July.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Special thank you to Dr. Ben Esparaz and his staff at the Cancer Care Center and all the girls in the chemo area. Blessings to all for the care you provided to Bill and what you do for others. You are super!
