City prepares for electricity auction

Posted: Friday, May 3rd, 2013

CLINTON — Jared McMorris, of Good Energy, met with city council members on Wednesday as the city prepares to enter the upcoming electricity auction. In March, Clinton voters approved a plan for electric aggregation, which authorized a third party broker to purchase electricity for residents.

Wednesday’s special city council meeting convened a public hearing, required by law before the city can proceed with a contract and participation in the auction. The council will hold a second required public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, before the 7 p.m. council meeting. One resident attended the hearing on Wednesday, as well as Clinton Chamber executive director Marian Brisard.

Some 105,000 households passed the March referendum across the counties in which Good Energy conducted public education programs.

“It will be going out to bid on May 15,” McMorris said. After the second public hearing, the council will vote to authorize a representative to attend the auction and sign a contract based on the winning bid for electricity.

The city sent the election results to Ameren so Ameren could release the names of its Clinton customers who are eligible to participate in the aggregation program. The supplier who wins the bid will provide electricity to Clinton’s Ameren customers. McMorris said local utility customers should see about a 25 percent reduction in their electric rates because of aggregation.

Once a winning supplier is selected, that company will sent letters notifying residents that the company will provide electricity over the length of the contract period. The letter will also include a card customers may return if they do not want to participate in the aggregation program.

Residents who do not return the cards are automatically included in the program.
