CLINTON — In spite of opposition from five of the county’s major public office holders, the DeWitt County board on Thursday, led by chairman Sherrie Brown, voted 6-5 to petition the court for a special state’s attorney to serve as legal counsel to the board.
The move is designed to bypass the authority of state’s attorney Karle Koritz and his assistant state’s attorney Lars Dunn in their capacity as legal advisors to the board. Five of the county’s major elected officials, however, sheriff Jered Shofner, county clerk Dana Smith, county treasurer Christy Long, county coroner Randy Rice and county chief probation officer David Berry, opposed Brown’s proposal.
