Monaghan retiring after 30 years

Posted: Friday, Aug 15th, 2014

Sgt. Tony Monaghan

has seen plenty of

changes to law enforcement in the 30 years he has served with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Department. Through the years, several sheriffs and a move into a new facility, though, he says technology has made the most difference in how sheriff’s personnel perform their jobs. Monaghan retires from the department today.

Don Massey was sheriff when he hired Monaghan in 1985. Monaghan has served under sheriffs Massey, Tom Farris, Gibb Birk, Roger Massey and Jered Shoffner. And, he even served as interim sheriff for four and a half months at one point.

“During that time period, he hired me,” said Shoffner, who started at the department as a deputy and became sheriff after Roger Massey’s retirement.
